MTI selects Wintegra for WiBro Access Point

From: | Date:2024-05-13

Wintegra announced today that MTI,  a  leading provider of information and communications technologies in Korea, Central and Southern Asia, the Middle East, has selected  the recently introduced WinMax processor and software from Wintegra for its pico WiBro (wireless broadband) Access Point.    The Wintegra solution will be used for the WiBro MAC layer and the network interface that delivers mobile voice, video and data traffic to the network.

The WinMax packet processor, which will be used by MTI to develop their picocell Access Point, was publicly announced and began production shipments in April.   WinMax is a highly scaleable, fully programmable silicon and software solution that can provide complete upper and lower MAC capabilities for WiBro, a version of 802.16e developed in Korea, and Wave 1 and Wave 2 WiMAX features, including MIMO.  The Wintegra solution also provides full network interface features such as NAT, Ethernet link aggregation, IP and GRE tunneling and ASN Gateway interfaces, which provides a very cost effective solution for pico stations such as that being developed by MTI.

"We are very impressed with the performance, scalability and flexibility of the WinMax processor and software," said Mr. Kyo-Young Chung, R&D Group Director for MTI.  "Such capabilities are critical in an emerging technology market, and are allowing MTI to better serve our clients who wish to take advantage of the many benefits that MTI and WiBro can bring to our region."

WinMax permits equipment manufacturers and network operators to build very cost effective and highly scalable networks around a common platform that can utilize pin-compatible, software-compatible processors to target everything from very low cost pico base stations to very high density, multi-sector macro base stations.  Wintegra provides its WinMax customers with full access to source code and development tools, giving customers the option of using the standard Wintegra production software, or adding proprietary features to the Wintegra MAC code, or using their own MAC code.

This same flexibility extends to the choice of CPE and subscriber station equipment, where Wintegra has successfully demonstrated WinMax interoperability with multiple WiBro and WiMAX 802.16e CPE providers for a wide range of features, including handover and MIMO capability.

"We are very pleased to work with MTI on this program," said Eran Kirzner, Director of Engineering for Wireless Systems at Wintegra. "MTI has long been a gateway for enabling advanced technologies in Korea to be deployed throughout the world, and we are excited to be a part of this effort for WiBro."

Wintegra provides a broad range of integrated silicon and software solutions for WiBro, WiMAX, 3G and LTE base stations and RNCs (radio network controllers), network interfaces, broadband wireless access, 2G and 3G cell site aggregation and backhaul.   The Wintegra fixed and mobile WiBro and WiMAX solution consists of a family of pin-compatible, software-compatible and fully programmable network processors that can scale from single sector, highly integrated pico cells to multi-sector base stations, incorporating advanced antenna technology.   Wintegra provides a complete software solution that incorporates the necessary scheduling, classification, encryption and QoS capabilities, as well as advanced features such as VLAN marking, payload header suppression (PHS), multiple CS layers, IP fragmentation and GRE and IP-in-IP tunneling, which are required to meet the R6 and R8 specifications of the WiMAX Forum network definition.   These capabilities enable rapid integration with next-generation wireless access networks and ASN gateways.

With WiBro and WiMAX customers in Korea, North America, Europe, China, Japan, Taiwan, India and the Middle East, Wintegra continues to enable the worldwide adoption of advanced communication protocols and emerging standards through an innovative mix of software and silicon technologies that support field upgrades as new standards emerge.

WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, and is based on the IEEE 802.16 air interface standard and the ETSI HiperMAN wireless metropolitan area network (MAN) standard.   Wintegra is incorporating WiMAX technology into its broad portfolio of solutions for next generation access markets, including VDSL and PON, wireless infrastructure, VoIP routers and gateways, and multi-service access (MSA) equipment.
